Case Study:
Montana DPHHS

Creating Clarity Around a Critical Mission

Reinforcing an essential government entity’s dedication to protecting Montana’s elderly population.

Montana DPHHS’s Adult Protective Services (APS) mission is to provide protection of Montana’s older persons and adults with disabilities from abuse, neglect, or exploitation while supporting the person’s safety, freedom, and the right to self-determination using the least restrictive approach. Due to their consistent work across Montana, they needed a better way not only to communicate with local residents but also to train partner entities/organizations on how to detect scams and protect the elderly from abuse.

The Challenge

  • Brand was dated and not  used consistently by staff and partner organizations
  • Staff members could only be in so many places across the state to train partner organizations
  • Information wasn’t readily available to local populations
  • Over-reliance on a dated website to convey information
  • Mission statement was often confused and conflated with other gov agency work

The Opportunity

APS needed to stand out from other government agencies, especially those within DPHHS. Its mission of protecting the elderly is essential to the overall community health in a state, and with that came a need to better communicate with communities and their elderly populations. A staff spread too thin across the state also needed tools to better reach partner organizations without needing to be there in person.

Our Approach

  • Update the brand as a whole so it’s more recognizable and distinguishable from other DPHHS agencies.
  • Create easily recognizable and distributable materials.
  • Develop a training routine for APS staff to share with partner organizations.

The Impact

  • Clear, unique brand
  • Improved communication with local communities
  • Better-trained, knowledgeable partner organizations
  • Increased national interest from other state agencies in using the training video as a template
  • Significantly reduced the time staff spend on repetitive introductory training.
  • High engagement on the website from APS stakeholders

Scope of Services

  • Refreshed brand (logos, colors, typography, templates)
  • Brand Guide
  • Informational Brochure
  • 22-Minute Training Video
  • :30 Awareness Video
